10 Minute Block

I completely love this 10 Minute Block.  It’s so quick and easy. Unfortunately I don't know the origin of this block. A fellow quilter introduced me to it and I enjoy passing on the method.

To make the block you will need 2 x 10” squares of contrasting fabric. As Christmas is coming I have used Christmas fabric so you can see how easy it is to make place mats and table centres for your Christmas table setting, or a quick and easy gift for a friend.

HOW TO MAKE THIS BLOCK

Step One: Take your 2 squares of fabric and with right sides together, sew a ¼” seam around the outside of the the block (all 4 sides).

Step Two: Next take a long ruler and lay it on the block and make a diagonal cut from corner to corner to make 2 triangles.

Step Three: Take one of the triangles and from the outside edge make a 2 ½” cut, keep all pieces together, and make another 2 ½” cut along the bottom of the triangle. Repeat this process for the other triangle.

Step Four: At the bottom of each triangle there is a 2 ½” square. You will need to unpick one side of the square.Open up the square and press open, then press open the other pieces.Lay out the pieces as shown and sew rows together in 3 rows and sew as indicated.

Step Five: Next join these rows together to form the block. You will notice that the block will need to be squared up.The block size should be between 11 ½” – 12” square. Depending on accuracy.

This block is so versatile and it makes some great projects like the following Christmas themed placemat and table runner seen below.

I have also added this  photo of a quilt using a layer cake. It made 21 blocks and 20 of these are used for the quilt, while the remaining block makes a great cushion. I have used 2 ½” wide strips for the sashing, and 2 ½” squares for the corner stones. The binding is the same colour as the corner stones.

Hope you like the block and use it to make you own creation.

Happy Sewing

Karen
